They are quantum computers which require less than 10 qubits. For most applications, only one qubit per quantum computer is required.

Why is the required repeater different from the classical repeater?

Classical repeaters are based on copying bits. However, qubits cannot be copied, thus quantum repeaters need to be different than the classical ones.
